Tamako Kataoka: Colours of Passion, Forms of the Soul

Tamako Kataoka: Colours of Passion, Forms of the Soul

Takato Kano Gallery Yokohama is pleased to present “Tamako Kataoka: Colours of Passion, Forms of the Soul” exhibition from 30 April to 12 June.

Kataoka is one of Japan’s most distinguished female artists and a recipient of the prestigious Order of Culture, recognised for both her artistic excellence and historical significance. She was also featured as one of the female artists presented by our gallery at Abu Dhabi Art 2025.

Mount Fuji stands as a central and enduring motif throughout her career. However, her repeated depictions are far from mere representations of landscape; rather, they reflect her inner state and evolving emotions. While painting the same subject, her shifting state of mind gave rise to ever-changing compositions and colour expressions, resulting in a distinctly different Fuji each time.

Her “Mount Fuji” series is characterised by bold colour contrasts, dynamic compositions, and a powerful reinterpretation of this iconic form. Moving beyond the conventions of traditional landscape painting, her works offer a universal meditation on power, permanence, and beauty.

Rooted in the traditions of Nihonga, yet infused with a modern sensibility, her paintings combine simplified forms with vivid planes of colour. This distinctive approach creates an immediate visual impact while inviting viewers to engage with the deeper spiritual dimension of her work.

Through this exhibition, visitors are invited to experience Kataoka’s unique artistic vision, marked by vibrant colour and dramatic composition.
We warmly welcome you to explore her ever-evolving interpretations of Mount Fuji and the profound artistic journey they embody.

We look forward to welcoming you.
