Toyo Kaneshige
Kaneshige Tōyō was a pioneering ceramic artist from Okayama Prefecture and the first Living National Treasure recognised for "Bizen ware". His real name was Isamu Kaneshige. During the Edo period, Bizen ware had declined in popularity due to the rise of "Imari" and "Kutani" ceramics. Kaneshige successfully revived this ancient tradition, earning him the title "Restorer of Bizen Ware." His contributions extended beyond his own mastery—he trained numerous disciples, many of whom later became Living National Treasures themselves, solidifying his lasting impact on the history of Japanese ceramics.
