Shozo Shimada

Shōzō Shimada is a Japanese painter known for his unique approach to Cubism. Born in 1933 in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture, he graduated from the Tokyo University of the Arts in 1960. During his studies in Europe, he encountered works by Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, leading him to explore how Cubism could be reinterpreted through a Japanese artistic perspective. This pursuit resulted in the creation of his signature figurative style known as "Katachibito" (literally "shape people"), a distinct form of expression that blends abstraction with human representation.
