Shoen Uemura
Shōen Uemura was a renowned Nihonga painter of the Meiji, Taishō, and Shōwa periods and the first woman to receive the Order of Culture in Japan. Born in Kyoto in 1875, she drew inspiration from the city’s rich cultural traditions, dedicating her career to portraying elegant and dignified women. Her paintings are characterised by graceful, simplified lines and subdued yet luminous colour palettes. She frequently depicted classical themes from "Noh" plays and historical stories, as well as everyday women from contemporary society.
