Shiko Munakata
Shikō Munakata was a renowned Japanese "hanga" (woodblock print) artist, celebrated for his expressive and dynamic approach to printmaking. Born in Aomori in 1903, he showed an early passion for painting and declared, "I will become a Van Gogh!" before moving to Tokyo at age 21 to pursue an artistic career. However, due to severe myopia, he struggled with perspective and depth in painting, leading him to discover the world of woodblock printing. His unique working style—pressing his face close to the woodblock while carving—became legendary.
