Seison Maeda

Maeda Seison (1885-1977) was a master painter who played a central role in shaping Japanese Nihonga painting during the Taishō and Shōwa periods. Seison was a leading figure of the Inten (Japan Art Institute) exhibitions and received the Order of Cultural Merit in 1955, establishing his position as one of the most important Nihonga painters of his time. The Seison Memorial Museum in Nakatsugawa City, Gifu Prefecture, houses paintings and preparatory drawings donated by the artist. One of his representative works, Yoritomo in the Cave, was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 2010.
