Roy Lichtenstein
Born in 1923 in New York, Roy Lichtenstein enrolled at the Ohio State University’s Department of Fine Arts in 1940. After serving in World War II, he earned his Master’s degree in 1949. He later worked as a university lecturer and draftsman while creating abstract expressionist-style works. In the early 1960s, he established his signature style, which mimicked enlarged comic book panels. Using bold outlines, primary colours, and Ben-Day dots to create shading, his work became a defining force in Pop Art. By emphasizing the flatness of comics, he challenged the boundary between fine art and mass culture, uncovering new artistic beauty. Over time, he expanded his repertoire to include parodies of classical masterpieces, brushstroke-themed series, and three-dimensional works, further pushing artistic boundaries. In 1995, he received the 11th Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy (Fine Arts Division).
