Noumen

A Noh mask is a traditional Japanese theatrical mask used in "Noh", a classical performing art that flourished during the Muromachi period (1338–1573) and continues to be performed today. It plays a crucial role in expressing the character's personality and emotions. There are various types of Noh masks, representing deities, men, women, spirits, and demons. Through intricate carving and colouring techniques, these masks create subtle expressions that change with lighting and the actor’s movements, allowing the audience to perceive different emotions. More than just a mask, a Noh mask helps the performer embody the character, adding a mysterious and spiritual atmosphere to the performance. Today, Noh masks continue to be crafted as part of a living tradition, valued not only in theater but also as highly regarded works of art.
