Migishi Setsuko
Setsuko Migishi was a pioneering Western-style painter from Aichi Prefecture and a key figure in the development of women's art in Japan. In 1946, she co-founded the Women’s Painting Association, advocating for female artists. In 1968, she moved to southern France, where she continued her artistic pursuits. Recognised as the first female Western-style painter to receive the title of Person of Cultural Merit in 1994. Migishi was celebrated for her thickly painted oil works, particularly her vibrant floral and landscape compositions. Her red flower motifs, symbolising the vitality of life, became a hallmark of her style. Driven by intuition and raw emotion, she infused her canvases with dynamic colour, expressing a deep passion for life and nature.
