Katsura Funakoshi is a Japanese sculptor known for his distinctive figurative works. Born in 1951 in Morioka, Iwate Prefecture, he is the son of Yasutake Funakoshi, a renowned postwar Japanese sculptor. His sister, Chieko Suemori, is the president of Suemori Books. Funakoshi’s sculptures, often carved from camphor wood and finished with delicate paintwork, are widely exhibited in museums and international contemporary art exhibitions. His works are also frequently featured in book cover designs, bringing his art to a broader audience. In addition to his artistic practice, Funakoshi teaches at his alma mater, Tokyo Zokei University, continuing to inspire the next generation of artists.
