Kaii Higashiyama
Kaii Higashiyama was one of the most celebrated Japanese painters of the Shōwa era, known for his landscape paintings that earned him national recognition. A recipient of the Order of Culture, he is regarded as a master of Nihonga (Japanese-style painting). Born in 1908 in Yokohama, he graduated from art school in 1931 and later studied at the University of Berlin (now Humboldt University) in 1933. Throughout his career, Higashiyama was drawn to the natural landscape, a theme he pursued with a distinctive use of deep blues and greens—often referred to as "Higashiyama Blue".
