Gyokudou Kawai

Gyokudō Kawai was a renowned Nihonga (Japanese-style) painter active from the Meiji to the Shōwa era and a recipient of the Order of Culture. He is best known for his elegant depictions of Japan’s seasonal landscapes and the lives of people and animals in rural villages, rendered with graceful ink lines and delicate colours. His masterpiece, "Yuku Haru" (Departing Spring), is designated an Important Cultural Property. Kawai’s style harmonised elements of the "Shijō" and "Kanō" schools, embodying his tranquil and harmonious perception of nature.
