Frank Stella

Frank Stella is a prominent American painter and sculptor of the 20th and 21st centuries, recognized as a key figure in postwar American abstract painting. Born in Malden, Massachusetts, he studied art history at Princeton University. Early in his career, Stella created works influenced by Minimalism and Hard-Edge painting, characterized by symmetrical compositions and bold color fields. However, from the 1980s onward, his style evolved dramatically. His later works feature dynamic compositions of painted fragments, twisted planes, and sculptural elements that extend beyond the conventional two-dimensional canvas, blurring the line between painting and sculpture. In Japan, the Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art is known for its extensive collection of Stella’s works, showcasing his artistic evolution and impact on contemporary art.
