Chung SangHwa
Born in 1932 in Seoul, Korea, Chung Sang-Hwa has lived and worked in Japan and Paris before returning to Seoul, where he is currently based. Since the 1970s, he has consistently employed a distinctive technique: applying multiple layers of oil paint onto a primed canvas, then systematically scraping away sections with a knife in a grid-like pattern. Through this repetitive process, he refines the composition to achieve colors and forms that align with his inner vision. Chung is recognized as a key figure in ”Dansaekhwa" (Korean monochrome painting), exploring the materiality and tactile qualities of painting.
